JJazz.Net"VOICES"では毎回、様々なアーティストからの最新メッセージをお届けしています。今回は、10月19日にアルバム『California』を発表するシンガー、Natalie Gardinerさん。新作についてたっぷり語って頂きました。

　「カリフォルニア」というのは私にとって、単なる場所以上の意味を持つ、もっと感覚的な何か、私の音楽的境地に影響を与えているものです。このアルバムを作るにあたって私が表現しようとしたのがそういった感覚であり、またアルバムのタイトルを「カリフォルニア」とした経緯もそこにあります。

　リスナーの皆さんに少しでも、私にとっての「カリフォルニアの空気」がどんなものであるかを伝えられればと思います。パーソナルな歌の詰まった、パーソナルな作品。今回、私が目指したのはそんなアルバムでした。

　アルバムの制作過程で、プロデューサーであるRMJCと私は、たくさんのメロディーとボーカルのハーモニーを取り入れることにしました。私はずっとメロディーを重要視していたし、曲を聴いてまず耳がいくのが旋律です。様々なハーモニーが重なり合って層を作り、そうして曲を構成して行く。クワイア（聖歌隊）のサウンドを作って行くような感覚でした。

　アニタ・ベイカーやビル・ウィザーズ、ジョニ・ミッチェルといった往年の歌手たちに始まり、ジル・スコットやアメール・ラリュー、またレイ・ラモンターニュなど最近のアーティストまで、私は沢山の素晴らしいシンガーにインスパイアされてきました。『カリフォルニア』では、彼らから影響を受けたエッセンスを取り入れつつ、魂の深層に迫ろうとしています。

　前作のリリースから今までの３年間、私は『カリフォルニア』の音のイメージを温め、固めていきました。
アコースティックギターやベース、トランペット、サックスにエレクトリックピアノなど楽器の生の音を増やし、それを歌声に重ねることで、より有機的な質感のある作品になるだろうと考えたのです。

　ファーストアルバムの発表以降、私は色々なプロデューサーたちと仕事をし、彼らの作品に参加しました。Gerd (4Lux Recordings) のアルバムでのレコーディングや、素晴らしいプロデューサー DJ Slowとの共演など。彼らは私に、新しい何かへトライする機会をくれたと同時に、今までとは違う歌や作曲のスタイルを提示してくれました。こういったコラボレーションは、これからもやっていきたいと思います。とっても楽しかった。

　今のところのプランは...、外に出て、自分のバンドで思いきり沢山のライブをすること。まずはスウェーデンでのギグが待っています。それから、すぐにでも、ヨーロッパを始め世界中を廻りたいと考えています。

　California, for me, is not first of all a place but more of a feeling and a musical state of mind. This is the feeling that I tried to express when I wrote the songs and thats why the album ended up being called California .
　When people listen to the songs I want to try to show them a little bit of what that feeling-California is to me. I tried to create a personal album with personal songs that all comes from that state of mind.
　On this album me and producer RMJC wanted to play a lot with melody and vocal harmonies. I have always been fascinated by melodies and this is often the first thing that attract my attention when I hear a song. I wanted to work with many different layers of harmonies and build the songs around them. Creating an almost choir like sound. I get a lot of inspiration from great singers like Anita Baker, Bill Withers and Jonie Mitchell but also newer artists like Jill Scott, Amel Larrieaux and Ray LaMontagne. On California I wanted to tap in to those sources and try to find a deeper side of soul.
　It has been three years since my last record and I think during this time I got really confident in how I wanted things to sound on California. This time we have used more live instruments, like acoustic guitar, bass, trumpet, saxophone and rhodes, on the songs which I think has given the record a more organic touch.
　Since my first album I've worked with other producers, singing on their albums. I collaborated with Gerd from 4Lux Recordings on a tune for his album. I also worked with finish producer DJ Slow. As much as I enjoy working with RMJC I really like these collaborations. They gives me the opportunity to try new things and get a different take on singing and songwriting. I hope a will find the time to do more of these collaborations. I really enjoy them.
　Right now my plans are to get out and play with my band as much as possible. First we have a bunch of gig in Sweden, but hopefully we'll get to Europe and the rest of the world as soon as possible.

Natalie Gardiner (ナタリー・ガーディナー)
スウェーデン、ウプサラ生まれ。

ガーナ人の父とスウェーデン人の母の間に生まれ、幼少の頃から歌への情熱を抱く。母のジャズ、ソウル、ファンク等の沢山のレコード・コレクションに囲まれで育ち、地元のジャズバンドで活動を始める。

1998年ストックホルムへ移り、数年、様々なバンドとの活動を経て、現在のプロデューサー／RAMJACのレーベル主宰者でもあるRMJCと活動を開始。2004年に発売されたデヴュー・アルバム『NATALIE GARDINER』は、ロンドン、北欧の音楽シーンを中心に話題となり、ジャイルス・ピーターソン、ベンジ B、ビクター・デュプレーといったDJからのサポートを受け、ストレイト・ノーチェーサー誌や北欧メディアを中心に高い評価を受ける。

これまでにオランダのGERDや、フィンランドのDJ SLOWといったアーティストの作品や、2006年に発売されたプロデューサーRMJCの1stアルバム『Transfusions』に参加。同年、夏に、2ndアルバムの制作を開始し、Goran Kajfes、Per Ruskträsk Johansson、Thobias Gabrielson、Jeppe Körsbär、Måns Block、Christer Karlssonといったミュージシャンをフューチャーした2ndアルバム『California』が遂に完成。
